The London 2012 1500m final should have been a clean fight for the podium. Instead, it became a case study in how doping and institutional corruption can steal results, confidence, and peace of mind from athletes who did everything right. I’m joined by Shannon Rowbury, one of the most accomplished US distance runners ever, an Olympic medalist, and an Emmy winning sports broadcaster, to talk about what it’s like to wait more than a decade for the truth to catch up.
Shannon shares her unlikely origin story, from Irish dance to discovering running in high school, and the mindset that helped her level up without the goal feeling out of reach. We dig into the emotional whiplash of finishing short of the medals, sensing something was wrong, and then learning years later she’s officially upgraded to Olympic bronze, with the medal to be awarded at LA 2028. The real story is not only about an Olympic 1500m result, but about identity, validation, and rebuilding self trust.
We also shift into motherhood and women’s health, including why Shannon co wrote Strong as a Mother with pelvic floor physical therapist Jessica Dorrington. We talk pregnancy exercise, core and pelvic floor basics, postpartum return to exercise, and why credible research based guidance is still too hard to find. Shannon also explains the fight for maternity protections in sport and how a USA Track and Field maternity policy helped change the landscape for athlete moms.
